Chelsea hijack Manchester United bid for Pedro

The Red Devils' unwillingness to match Barcelona's €30 million asking price has alienated the 28-year-old, who believes he would enjoy a more important role at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are now in pole position to sign Barcelona forward Pedro after making a late bid to hijack Manchester United’s move for the Spaniard, Goal understands.

Pedro travelled to London on Wednesday morning to hold talks with Chelsea ahead of a €30 million move, and personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle to completing the deal.

United have pursued Pedro for much of the summer but the Spaniard is understood to have become frustrated with the Red Devils' unwillingness to match Barcelona’s asking price of €30m, while conversations with close friend and former team-mate Victor Valdes have left him wary of Louis van Gaal’s management style.

Jose Mourinho is a long-time admirer of the 28-year-old, who can play anywhere across the frontline, and Diego Costa's sluggish start to the season has convinced him that his Chelsea squad needs another goal threat. The Premier League champions are so far the only club to indicate that they are happy to meet Barcelona's asking price.

Pedro's change of heart will be a big blow to Van Gaal, who is looking to bolster an attack presently over-reliant on Wayne Rooney following the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao. United came tantalisingly close to sealing a deal for the 28-year-old prior to Barca's two-legged Spanish Super Cup clash with Athletic.

Destro to join Bologna from Roma

The has announced his departure from Roma and is set to join the northern Italian team on a reported €10 million deal
Mattia Destro has announced he has opted to join Serie A newcomers Bologna in a deal reported to be worth €10 million.

The Roma striker has been linked with Premier League new boys Norwich City, whose manager Alex Neil confirmed his interest in the 24-year-old last week.

Destro – who spent the second half of last season on loan at Milan – has decided against a move to England, though, and is now set to spearhead Bologna's attack on their return to Serie A.

"From today begins my new adventure with Bologna," the 24-year-old posted on his official Facebook account. "I will give my all to repay your trust.

"I'm comiiiiiing!"

Neither Bologna nor Roma have confirmed the deal as yet.

Chelsea close in on Pedro move

Chelsea are in pole position to sign Pedro after Manchester United's interest in the Barcelona winger cooled.

Premier League champions Chelsea, reeling from their worst start to a season in 17 years, are understood to be interested in the Spanish forward.
It is not clear how far negotiations for the 28-year-old have progressed, but United now appear to have conceded defeat in the race for his signature, handing the initiative to Chelsea.
Pedro is reportedly available for a fee of £22million, but senior figures at Old Trafford say doubts in the player's mind over the move led United boss Louis van Gaal to end the pursuit.
The Spain forward would add to Jose Mourinho's attacking options and his potential arrival could lead to a move away from Stamford Bridge for Juan Cuadrado.
Cuadrado, a January arrival from Fiorentina, has struggled to impose himself on the Blues and has been linked with a return to Italy.
Chelsea have one point from their opening two games of the season and are also looking to strengthen in defence.
John Stones has been the subject of a reported three failed bids, with Everton determined to hold on to the England centre back.
The Blues play at West Brom on Sunday and at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday week prior to the closure of the transfer window on Tuesday, September 1, by when Mourinho will hope to have bolstered his options in attack and defence.

Bassong extends Norwich stay

Sebastien Bassong has signed a new contract to remain at Norwich City until at least 2017.

The 29-year-old defender joined the club from Tottenham in 2012 when Chris Hughton was manager and, beyond spending part of the past season on loan at Watford, has remained an important figure since.

"I'm very happy to have signed this contract," Bassong, who returned to Norwich's first team under manager Alex Neil, told the club's official website.

"It's been an enjoyable time recently, getting promoted and achieving what we wanted to achieve. It provided great satisfaction for all of us.

"I enjoy playing for this team. Bit by bit, it is getting better and I feel better, and the manager has played a big part in that. I owe him a lot because he gave me my chance back in the team."

Bassong was peripheral under Neil's predecessor Neil Adams but the Scottish manager explained: "If you look through the spine of the team, it's not something I change that often and Seb has been a big part of that.

"He's performed extremely well since I've been here, and he's been a really good influence around the place as well which is great.

"It was very important to get this deal done, as well as some of the other ones which we've managed to do recently. They are guys who have contributed a lot to the group in the short time that I've been here.

"I'm really pleased for him. It's a reward for him and hopefully we can grow, get better and kick on."

Atletico star Antoine Griezmann agrees deal and Chelsea set to pay huge fee if interested

ATLETICO MADRID have increased the buy-out clause in Antoine Griezmann's contract and Chelsea will have to pay in excess of £46million to sign him, according to reports.

Chelsea have long been linked with the French attacker and were thought to be considering a bid of around £28m earlier in the summer.

However, he previously had a clause of £46.1m installed into his deal and Spanish publication AS claim it has been upped.

He remains under contract at the Vicente Calderon stadium until 2020.

The 24-year-old has already outlined his desire to stay in Spain despite reported interest from all over Europe.

Bayern Munich are also understood to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Griezmann moved to Madrid at the start of last season for around £24m from La Liga rivals Real Sociedad and scored 22 goals in 37 league games.
